Jurányi Incubator House
The contact zone is, by definition, ‘a social space and a time spent together, where (representatives of) cultures of hierarchical and asymmetrical relations meet.’ This is why theater can become a land of representation and self-representation at the same time. A land where the voices of suppressed minorities can make themselves heard, and where social roles can break free of stereotypes. But is there a contact zone in Hungary today that really offers an opportunity to reinterpret these positions? What is the representation of the largest ethnic minority, the Roma, on the stage and among professionals? What difficulties do creators face when they wish to talk about ‘them’ and when they choose to represent themselves? Even so, how distinct is the line between ‘you’ and ‘us’, and what can theater do to eliminate it?
