Freak Fusion/Firebirds
fightinGravity (60')

Moving through life is about battling forces in every moment. We rise and fall every day, or simply drift through chaos and sometimes even float in mid air.

Circus is all about gravity and our relation to it. Whatever you toss up, it’ll eventually fall down. No matter how strong you are, you can’t hold on forever.

Would you like to walk on walls? How about falling without ever landing? Have you ever dreamt about flying?

FightinGravity uses vertical dance, juggling and acrobatics colliding in a physical theatre experience that shows a glimpse of the concurring forces we fight.

Do you want to see me crash?

REVIEWS

“The greatest surprise I’ve experienced this season was at Trafó. Back in May, Freak Fusion produced a brand new show, titled fightinGravity, which is a giant leap for the young company and, I venture to say, for Hungarian new circus in general. Immense amounts of work, pure structures, inventively crafted solo and duo acts, floor and aerial acrobatics, a couple of planks and some rubber ropes, and optimal use of space – all this is proof that it’s not absolutely necessary to have an institutional safety net and national strategies in order to create something truly significant out of sheer will.” Zsófia Molnár, Színház

“Juggling with fire, aerial acrobatics and contemporary dance are all integral parts of this performance. During the various pieces, artistes from different fields regale us with their own realities, but the overall picture remains a  consistent whole: the performances build upon each other to create a fully coherent production. The show this year is nevertheless different from the ones we have seen before: focused, thematic, and ethereal at times, this stunningly precise performance is the work of just five artistes. The evening is constructed around the themes of empty space and gravity; in consequence, the fire has leapt from the ends of the flame-tipped juggling sticks and has set alight the atmosphere of the entire performance: each act flows into the next in a mesmerising cascade that holds the audience’s attention right until the end.” Krisztián Bokor, kulter.hu

FIREBIRDS

Firebirds circus group was established in 2000. Their repertoire includes fire shows, street performances, cabaret, contemporary circus and children’s theatre.

As the team evolved Freak Fusion Cabaret emerged in 2008 from a wide range of performers, musicians, dancers and circus artists.

The collective’s aim has been to deliver creative and quality entertainment to a wide variety of audiences through the context of new circus.

Being self-taught enthusiasts, the members of the company are constantly pushing their limits by gaining and teaching new skills. Be it a workshop, a gathering or a convention, they are on a constant search for new horizons. While the show may end on stage, the background work never stops, so they share responsibilities and duties among themselves. Even in busy times, collaborations have motivated the Firebirds to take part in the international scene as well as in the emerging world of Hungarian new circus.
