SUB.LAB.PRO / Jenna Jalonen
RING (50')

Opened: 2021
Non-verbal

“SUB.LAB.PRO - The Ensemble Program has by now grown into an internationally renowned educational platform where emerging dancers can develop themselves through training, creation, and theoretical education over a season. Created in 2021, the Rudolf Lábán Award-winning performance returns to the ancient motif of the circle and seeks parallels between the dances of nations, freeing them from gender roles and searching for the ancient origins of traditional motions. This sacral energy is at once feminine and masculine, everything in between and everything outside, exploring instinct and connection. A pinpoint structure and system. Two Belgian, two French, one Israeli, two Hungarian, and one Italian performers participated in the creation, making the connection to folk dance elements even more interesting. What does it mean to be authentic today? What is folk dance without a traditional context? Where are we involved?

«The art of folk dance, today it increasingly seems, will not be renewed from within. We need a new generation that is uninvolved, and that approaches its heritage with the same freedom as it does anything else. This is the way it is, and it has to be embraced.» - concludes Csaba Králl, dance critic in the literary weekly Élet és Irodalom.” Levente Lukács, curator

The production was awarded the Rudolf Lában Prize for best contemporary dance production and for the Best Creator and Performer prize at the TÁNC fesztiválja Veszprém.

REVIEWS

“One of the most divisive questions in our current society is how we nurture tradition. Jalonen nurtures it by absorbing it, rewriting it, reflecting on it. But that’s not the end of it; he also blends in today’s tradition, the world of parties. Tradition into tradition, the living into the dead. What is really beautiful is that we are not aware, because it is not exactly visible in the choreography, certainly not at the level of details, of how long the past lasts and where the present begins. We do not know what comes from the ancestors and what is added by the present."
Csaba Králl, Élet és Irodalom

“Those who are familiar with contemporary dance must have already noticed that today, with few exceptions, choreographies that originally transcribe and reinterpret folk dance are linked to contemporary artists, workshops, and schools whose native language is not folk dance. They are actually outsiders. They look at the (movement) tradition from the outside, almost from an observer status, and from this position they create something new, something different [...]

A circle has no angles. There is nothing to prevent or withstand the release of its self-exciting inner energies when it sets itself in motion. The Ring is such an energy base. A spiraling force field kept in unwavering momentum by seven great dancers. Their dose of energy is ours too. Our charge is their strength. Double success.”
Csaba Králl, Rudolf Lában Award laudation

SUB.LAB.PRO The Ensemble Program

… is a creative platform for dancers to expand their technical and creative capabilities through choreographic creations. The program offers guidance to pre-professional dancers in forging individual career paths and unique, artistic identities.

The program is designed to foster a realistic appreciation of the professional environment by offering a complete tool kit to sustain and nourish the dancer within the field of contemporary dance in a company-like structure. Besides daily training and profession-related lectures, the Ensemble takes part in 4+1 choreographic creations led by internationally acclaimed choreographers which premier in Trafo throughout the season.

RING was created with the Ensemble dancers of season 2021/2022. Currently, the dancers are all professional freelancers, and the production is touring independently from the program.
