TRAFÓ HOUSE OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS

Trafó House of Contemporary Arts is a receptive venue unique to Hungary, where theatre, dance, new circus, music and visual arts are presented in an authentic manner. Trafó is not only a well known spot for contemporary arts in Hungary, but is also embedded in the international scene.
Trafó’s programme presents domestic and international artists and is curated according to a unified, yet diverse approach, which is experimental and audience-friendly at the same time, based on new directions as well as our cultural memories.
Trafó is a mediating site dedicated to social issues, a platform for establishing values and contexts and it also nurtures new ideas and productions. Its performances, concerts, exhibitions, community and audience-building programs invite everyone open to new approaches and address different generations with special attention to youth.
ÁTRIUM

The Atrium, formerly the May 1st Cinema, is a space for international collaborations combining theatre, film, dance and music and a home of unique productions. It is a diverse, open-minded cultural and artistic space, where the nostalgia of the Bauhaus and the creativity of youthful dynamism meet. An important asset of the Atrium is its spacious and atmospheric lobby with a great café.
AURORA COMMUNITY AND CULTURAL CENTRE

Aurora is a community and cultural centre which was created to connect cultural programs, civil and activist organisations work, community building and fun in an open community. We are committed to forming a stable base, where individuals, groups, non-profit organisations could meet, share their ideas and collaborate with each other on new initiatives. One of the most important goals of the Auróra project is the strengthening of the civil sector, inspire cooperation among the organisations and to provide them publicity.
BETHLEN THEATER

The theatre is located in Budapest’s 7th District, on Bethlen Gábor Square. Renamed Bethlen Theater in 2012 (as it was called until 1937), the building that had functioned as a dance theatre for more than 15 years became a host/receptive theatre and production house. Its objective is to support generations of young artists and performers without imposing any restrictions on the creative process.
Its programme is curated in the spirit of “total art”. In addition to four pillars – prose performance, dance, children’s puppet theatre and cabaret – circus, visual theatre and improvisation also have a place in the Bethlen Theatre. The audience can enjoy festivals, contemporary dance and theatre performances, Sunday plays for children, free film screenings, and exhibitions at the Bethlen Gallery. Their café hosts concerts, stand-up shows and improvised theatre performances.
FÜSZI - INDEPENDENT THEATER HUNGARY

It doesn’t matter where you come from, it is what you think of the world that is important for FÜSZI. FÜSZI’s main goal is that young people would be able to live together regardless of their origin and would do a lot together so that we can live in a more hospitable country. While this new space opens new doors for FÜSZI, FÜSZI in turn opens doors for you. This unique centre is a welcoming environment and an inspiring base for Roma culture, independent theatres and young artists.
JURÁNYI ART INCUBATOR HOUSE

The production organisation FÜGE (short for Függetlenül Egymással, Independently Together) was founded in 2006 and is dedicated to supporting the Hungarian independent performing art scene, nurturing young talent and facilitating innovation. It provides the institutional background for the artistic activities of a number of successful companies and creators. It is also an umbrella organisation for independent local performing arts organisations working for visibility, lobbying for funds, running important grant programmes and generally advocating the importance of the arts.
In 2012 FÜGE Productions renovated the empty school building under 1-3 Jurányi street with the support of the 2nd District of Budapest, Open Society Institute and Mastercard, and opened a 6500 square metre incubator house.
More than 60 organisations; theatre and dance companies, visual artists, musicians, designers as well as NGOs have their rehearsal rooms, studios, labs, showrooms and offices on 5 levels in this multi-functional space.
Jurányi is a creative hub and a well-liked downtown theatre showing 40-50 shows per month, around 300 performances and events a year on four stages. The main stage has 150 seats, there are two chamber stages of 80, and 70 seats and a versatile venue for classroom projects and other events.
Jurányi runs a gallery, houses a café and is a popular meeting place of downtown Buda.
MU THEATRE

MU Theatre is a 130-seater black box presenting contemporary dance, theatre and music productions from both Hungary and abroad. It is an established and well known venue that opened in 1991. Based on a new artistic vision, MU Theatre extended its hosting/receptive function in April 2009, including the launch of a theatre in education programme, pre-show discussions for selected performances, and the management of its own productions. In the compilation of the repertoire, emphasis has shifted from quantity to quality, thus giving more attention to hosted artists and creations.
In addition to presenting productions, MU also undertakes to organise and host workshops, seminars and platforms as well as festivals.
ÖRKÉNY

The Örkény István Theatre is an independent repertory theatre and one of the most important theatres in the country. Örkény is primarily a prose drama theatre, but it remains open to a wide variety of genres. Its repertoire has included more than a hundred works, from classic to contemporary. “Regardless of genre, we see the meaning of our work in our choice of high literature, in our careful rehearsals, in our openness to public issues, in our love of humour, grotesque and the many shades of irony.” Örkény’s ten-year-old theatre education programme was one of the first in Hungary and opened up a new channel for active, community-building engagement with audiences.

SÍN ARTS CENTRE

SÍN Arts Centre is a Budapest-based production house with 4 spacious dance studios, operating in the field of contemporary performing arts. SÍN operates all year round, hosting rehearsals, production periods and researchers of more than 100 artistic formations a year. Beyond the infrastructure it offers a professional environment to work in, production management and fundraising services, support in career development, assistance in finding the best possible context and partners for a specific project. Furthermore SÍN organises workshops led by local or international artists and initiates discussions and cooperations between various stakeholders. SÍN plays an active role in the strategic thinking of the field's present and future in Hungary and beyond the borders and has the aim to develop a flexible and innovative, yet strong community of artists and art professionals locally and globally.
STEREO WORKSHOP

STEREO Workshop is a new cultural hub and community space in Budapest’s vibrant and diverse 8th District. The Workshop is a socially engaged, community-focused, contemporary cultural centre and a home for STEREO AKT, a Hungarian contemporary theatre collective founded in 2013. The artistic director is Martin Boross, a Junior Prima Award-winning director whose work has been seen in 40 cities in 13 countries.
SZKÉNÉ THEATRE

Szkéné Theatre has been operating in its present home in the main building of Budapest University of Technology and Economics since 1970, for more than forty years. This chamber theatre has been the 'alma mater' of the alternative, independent movement in Hungary for decades. Well-known practitioners of almost every branch of artistic life have begun their careers here – theatremakers such as Árpád Schilling or Béla Pintér, dancers, musicians, painters and sculptors and performers have had and still do have today the confidence and the opportunity to try out their talents at the start of their careers. At present the theatre is functioning as a receptive theatre, an open-minded independent theatrical and artistic base, with no resident company.
WORKSHOP FOUNDATION

Workshop Foundation (WSF) was founded in 1993 as an organisation supporting contemporary performing and cross-disciplinary arts. It focuses mainly on the following aspects: social and professional environment, partnership, collaboration, crossing borders both in the geographical sense and between artistic disciplines as well as long-term thinking.
WSF runs 4 studios in two highly important art institutes - in Trafó House of Contemporary Arts and in Jurányi Art Incubator House. The Foundation works with nearly 200 Hungarian and foreign artists yearly - principally - on the field of contemporary dance. Workshop Foundation is mostly known abroad for its international coproductions, training and residency programs as well as its active role in networks. Important networks, partnerships: Life Long Burning, Aerowaves, GPS - Movement Research, Philadelphia Dance Projects, PEJA.
